Chapter Ten

They led the group back into the cool interior of the big living room. The easterners weren’t used to the dry August heat of the high mountain desert. The ninety-five degrees outside felt like eighty but baked the body like a hundred and twenty.

Everyone sank into chairs. Ty grabbed bottles of water out of the small fridge behind the bar and handed them around. “Best keep hydrated out here. The heat and altitude can do a job on you lowlanders.”

He sat on the arm of Eden’s chair. They had the living room to themselves. He was grateful the others were giving them time to get acquainted—at least until an odd silence settled over the room. He caught the look between Eden’s bio parents. Oh no, here it comes.

Grant glanced at him and offered a stiff smile. “We want to thank you for bringing us all out. It was a long trip, but an extremely comfortable one.”

“Of course,” Ty said. “It was the least we could do with the short notice we gave you for the wedding.”

Grant leaned forward, rolling his ice-cold water bottle between his hands. He stared at it and sighed, then looked at his daughter and Ty. “Have you really thought this marriage through?”

“Dad—”

Grant held up his hand, forestalling her complaint. “Don’t make a scene, Eddie. It’s a simple question. I’m your father. I’m speaking from a father’s heart.” He gestured toward Ty. “What do you really know about him? There’s nothing on the Internet about him. A man as wealthy as he is, from such a prominent family—there’s nothing to be found about him.”

Eden’s face was an angry red as she flashed a quick look at Ty. “He values his privacy.”

Her dad looked at him but spoke as if he weren’t in the room. “Mm-hmm. I even paid for one of those online background checks.”

“You did what?” Eden asked in a shocked voice. “I don’t believe this.”

“He did his due diligence, Eden. That’s cool. Nothing wrong with that. I’ll be doing the same for our daughter, should we be lucky enough to have one.”

Her dad’s lips thinned, and his eyes narrowed as he looked at Ty. “It came back with only your address. Not even a phone number. How is that possible?”

Eden put her hands on her face. “I can’t believe you did that.”

Her dad stood up. “Nothing is hidden from the Internet, Eden. There’s info on everyone—what schools they went to, who their friends are, where they work. There’s none of that for him. It’s like he doesn’t exist.” He waved his hand around. “Like this is all a smoke screen.”

“He exists, all right. And I’m marrying him Saturday.”

Grant leaned forward and gave her that awful parental look. “Honey, I know how you think you feel for him.”

“You mean how I do feel for him…”

Grant looked him in the eye. “I’m not happy about this wedding.”

Ty had had enough. He stood up and got into Grant’s space, backing him away from Eden. “You don’t have to be.
